Guys @ Dreamhost speaking their mind about Rails

The Dreamhost guys have posted a great editorial over at the Dreamhost Blog about Rails and where it needs to go to get better. The post seems to have been stemmed from the hot topic of Zed Shaw’s Rails rant from the past week (which I read and although some topics are valid.. really just seemed like a bitch fest to me).

I love that they don’t try to hide the fact of Rails really not being stable on Dreamhost although I’ve heard of workarounds (such as keeping every Rails app on a different user? Haven’t tried that one myself though). They seem to want to stick with the framework but can’t justify all the ’special needs’ to make it work as suggested by the Rails Core team.

Even though the whole article is worth the read, I believe that this is one of the best and most valid points:

  • "Ruby on Rails needs to more or less work in ANY environment. You can’t just expect your users to set up their servers any which way. There are millions of established systems that cannot simply integrate any bleeding edge technology you think is better this week. If you continue to keep this attitude you are surely shooting yourselves in both feet."
