This past Christmas, as a present from my fiance, I was given a laptop. What a wonderful gift as I have never had one. My goal was to get a Macbook but it was a little pricier than we wanted to pay. Maybe next time!
Ever since I’ve had the laptop I have had a dream to get Vista and Ubuntu to work as a nice dual boot setup. Vista is great but I do rails programming where I would like to have console access built in and Cygwin just doesn’t like to play nice. So I download the handy dandy Ubuntu disk and away I go. Previously when I’ve used live CD’s there has been no problem…they just work. Not this case this time! I was unable to get to boot into a GUI, which really takes the fun out of things.
After a lot of playing around I found out that the dumb ATI isn’t making it easy for the open source community. The drivers pretty much suck. Eventually everything was good with that. Now once I was in the GUI, my wireless wouldn’t work! Geez, I should just stop here! Again after more snooping around… I found that this is common with the dell wireless chipset (I knew I should have just gone with the Intel wireless care!). So the same thing goes again, more searching in forums and the solution presented itself.
Now a few months later not having even used Ubuntu all that much since the install… all the pretty Vista like stuff comes out. And of course I want in! Tried that out but again because of that damn ATI card…it just doesn’t seem to work. I was in the forums again and stumbled upon this post: HOW TO: Feisty On Dell 6400 + Ati X1400. I figure the x1400 is close enough to the x1300 which I have. Turns out closer to the end of the post the guy has created a live CD that is already compiled with the fixes! Needless to say I have downloaded the ISO from his article and will be starting from scratch hopefully later tonight. Wish me luck!
Wow, he’s even going to start making a similar live CD for the new Ubuntu version: Gutsy Gibbon.
