So I’d like to begin this post by saying that I totally under estimated the power of Craigslist. With that being said… I’ll tell you why.
A few years ago I moved to California and soon after was laid off of my job. Boohoo for me! My roommate and I had the hardest time finding a work there as the market is pretty much saturated with people looking for some extra scratch doing web work. We did misc. stupid jobs like Fry’s and Best Buy till something better came along. Finally we got ‘real’ jobs and that was that.
Now I’ve moved back the Chicagoland area and have a decent job that pays ok. Well I think it pays well but compared to the contracting job I had with the same company over the summer, it pales in comparison. Anyway, on with the story! Where was I? O yeah, Craigslist. So one day my old roommate and best friend Andrew gets the bright idea that he’s in need of some extra cash. Having the entrepreneurial spirit… he places an ad in Craislist for some web work on the cheap. And what do you know, he gets a response on the first day! Naturally I was like, well hell, I’m gonna do the same thing for this area. Once again, I get a response on the first day. Now I know what you’re thinking…Ok you got a response but it was probably crap or spam. Well I will assure you that it wasn’t. These are legitimate contacts and we both have now had successful work relationships come of them.
So I guess I just wanted to share with those aspiring web workers out there. There is work out to be had. Sometimes you have to cut your hourly rate to get your name out there, but I believe that is part of the game. Larger jobs will come after you’ve paid your dues!
